Linux From the Metal Up

Caveats

  • Version numbers are a snapshot as of 30 October 2026. Linux 7.4 is in its merge window, so features attributed here to 7.4, such as the removal of the C Binder driver, are merged but not yet released. LFS’s development book already tracks newer packages than 13.1. Always build from the exact book version whose package list you downloaded.
  • Some implementation details are version-sensitive, and the source is authoritative over this article. These include the exact x86 syscall dispatch function, mm function names (mm_init became mm_core_init), the default preemption model in distro kernels, and SLUB sheaves. If a function named here is missing in your tree, search Elixir for its successor.
  • LFS commands above are condensed. The book includes per-package patches, sed fixes and test-suite steps that are omitted here. Follow the book, not this article, when actually building.
  • The BusyBox tc workaround applies to some BusyBox and kernel-header combinations. If your build succeeds without it, leave tc enabled.
  • Several 7.3 details (record commit counts, fchroot, failfs, sched_ext sub-schedulers) come from LWN and KernelNewbies summaries of the release. Check the merge commits if you depend on exact semantics.
